How to create a Magnifying Glass with a Photo Zoom Effect in Adobe Photoshop

This tutorial teaches us how to create a magnifying glass in Adobe Photoshop. It also teaches us how to utilize a zoom effect, so it looks like the magnifying glass is actually zooming in on the object beneath it.
Step 1: New Document
Open a new document (Ctrl + N).
Step 2: New Layer
Create a new layer in your layers dialog by going to the main menu and selecting Layer > New > Layer.
Step 3: Custom Shape Tool
Select the custom shape tool icon in your Tool Bar.
Step 4: Search Shape
Select the “Search” icon in the custom shape tool bar.

Step 5: Create Magnifying Glass
Create something that looks like a magnifying glass.
Step 6: Rotate the Magnifying Glass
Rotate the magnifying glass by going to Edit > Free Transform and then changing the orientation.
Step 7: Select Handle
Select the handle of the magnifying glass

Step 8: Make a Copy of the “Handle” Layer
Right click – layer via copy.
Step 9: Foreground Color
Set foreground color to #7b5124.
Step 10: Background Color
Set background color to #cd834b.
Step 11: Wood Effect
Create a wood looking effect by going to Filter > Render > Fibres ( add wood effect)
Step 12: Rectangular Marquee Selection Tool
With rectangular marquee tool make a selection ( Set feather radius on 2 px for rectangular marquee tool).

Step 13: Dodge Tool
Use dodge tool and dodge the selected part.

Step 14: Burn Tool
Use burn tool and burn the side parts. First, use the rectangular marquee selection tool to make the following selection. Then, use the burn tool to burn out that selection. Then switch over to the opposite side and do the same.

Step 15: Wood Handle Results
You should have something like this:
Step 16: Layer 1
Select layer 1.
Step 17: Delete Layer 1
Delete Layer 1 and then create another New Layer. With the elliptical marquee tool make this selection :

Step 18: Stroke Path
Right click -> Stroke Path and make the following settings:
Step 19: Create New Layer
Create another New Layer.
Step 20: Make Selection
Make the following crescent shaped selection:

Step 21: Fill Selection
Fill the selection with gray color.
Step 22: Gradient Overlay
Right click the selected layer and go to Blending Options -> Gradient Overlay – make these settings:
Step 23: More Settings
Proceed to make the following settings:
Step 24: Preview
After these steps you should have something like this:
Step 25: Flip Duplicated Layer
Duplicate the last layer and go to Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal.
Step 26: Preview
Make sure you have something like this crescent shape:
Step 27: Move Layer
Move the layer to the left:
Step 28:
Select all the layers, and go to Layer > New > Group for layers, you should have now a group called “Group 1 “. Duplicate this group:
Step 29: Merge Group
Select the group called “Group 1 Copy” and merge it.

Step 30: Merged Group Preview
You should have something like that:
Step 31: Group 1 Layer Visibility
Modify layer visibility for Group 1 by pressing on the eye. This removes the Layer from view.
Step 32: Rotate Magnifying Glass
Go to Edit > Free Transform and rotate the magnifying glass like this:
Step 33: Create New Document
Make a new document with following settings:
Step 34: Move Magnifying Glass
Move the magnifier into the new document :
Step 35: Add Background Picture
Add a background. I used a print screen.
Step 36: Background Preview
You should have something like this:
Step 37: Select Inner Rim
Make a selection around the inside rim of where the glass will be, like this:

Step 38: Copy Background Circle
Copy a circle to go inside the magnifying glass from the original print screen. Paste it and it will show as another layer:
Step 39: Place Circle in Magnifying Glass
Move the circle to the center of the magnifying glass and size it to fit.
Step 40: Create Inner Shadow
Right click on the last layer and go to Blending Options and make following setting for inner shadow :
Step 41: Select Inner Rim
With the Pen Tool or Elliptical Marquee tool make a selection like this:

Step 42: New Layer
Make a new layer (Shift+Ctrl+N):
Step 43: Color Fill
Fill the selection with white:
Step 44: Change Opacity
Make next settings for the layer – Opacity 15%:
Step 45: Create Another Inner Shadow
Right click on the layer and go to Blending Options -> Inner Shadow , and make these settings:
Step 46: Preview Lens
You should have something like this:
Step 47: Create New Layer
Create another New layer (Ctrl+Shift+N):
Step 48: Pen Tool Select
Make this kind of selection with pen tool:

Step 49: Color Fill
Fill the selection with with white:
Step 50: Change Opacity
Make next settings for the filled layer – Opacity 44%:
Step 51: Preview of Reflection
Should have something like this:
Step 52: Drop Shadow
Select the magnifier layer and go to Blending Options –> Drop Shadow and make the following settings:
Step 53: And the Final Result!
Great work! You now have an awesome magnifying glass:
